Quality Water Softeners and Salt-Free Water Softeners
A traditional (Ion Exchange with Salt) Water Softener effectively removes >99% of hardness from your water supply and up to 1.5 ppm of iron. It also periodically regenerates the softening media about every 3 days consuming both water and salt, and also adds some salt to the water. These units are the most effective at reducing hardness spotting and scale buildup on external surfaces such as glass and tile, while also effectively protecting your plumbing and appliances from internal scale buildup. We recommend following your softener with a drinking water RO System in your kitchen to remove the salt from your drinking water.
A Salt-Free Water Softener / Water Conditioner leaves the calcium hardness in the water but forms it into tiny little calcium crystals that do not create a "hard plate" onto everything it touches.
In your water pipes, appliances, and water heater these tiny crystals are carried through the pipes by moving water. They no longer want to attach to surfaces.
On a surface left to dry, such as a shower door, instead of plating the surface with a hard scale which is very difficult to remove, the crystals will dry to a white powder which is easily brushed away with a damp cloth.
There is also some benefit for a Reverse Osmosis unit as well. In a Reverse Osmosis unit the calcium crystals are more inclined to rinse out with the waste water rather than clog and plate the membrane with calcium.
FYI: Our water softener customers typically consume 40% LESS SALT per year - and also 33-66% LESS WATER spent on Regeneration Cycles.
About SALT: Load your salt tank with Solar Salt (better price-saves money, less clumping) or Pellet Salt (fill tank about halfway to prevent clumping) Potassium based salt sounds like a great idea but is more expensive, works less efficiently, and even contains a small amount of Potassium-40 isotope. If you wish to use potassium chloride your softener system will need to be bigger.
About IRON: Standard water softening resin will effectively remove 0-1.5 ppm of dissolved iron. Our Fine Mesh softening resin will effectively remove 2-5 ppm of dissolved iron. Add an additional $10. for every cubic foot of resin if you need the Fine Mesh.
